Tidal Streams
The maximum rate of the ebb stream at springs throughout the year is from 2 to 3 knots and at Neaps from ¾ to 1¼ knots.
Ebb Stream Springs 2 – 3 knots
Ebb Stream Neaps ¾ to 1¼ knots
Flood Stream Springs 1 ½ - 2 knots
Flood Stream Neaps ¾ - 1¼ knots
Both streams run for considerable time after the predicted times of High and low water, for about 2 hours on the flood and 2 – 3 hours on the ebb.
After heavy inland rains the ebb stream may run continuously for many days, while the flood stream enters the harbour under the surface ebb.
Tides:
The tides in Cochin are semi-diurnal with a marked daily inequality. The maximum range at Springs being about 1 m and 0.6 m at Neaps.
Wind:
Winds in Cochin are highly influenced by land and sea breezes. Wind direction changes from North East in the morning hours to West during the afternoon and evening during the period from October to May. During the South West monsoon, between June and September the effect of the land and sea breezes is not dominant and the wind direction remains predominantly South West.
Waves:
Wave action in the sea is strong during South West monsoon period of June to September with the predominant direction being Westerly.
Inside the harbour, calm conditions prevail throughout the year being well protected from outside waves by Fort Cochin and Vypin headlands.
Cyclones:
Due to its location the risk of Cyclones in Cochin is negligible.
Salinity:
Within the harbour the salinity varies from 1000 to 1025 depending on the season and state of tide. Declared maximum drafts however are basis Salt-water density.
Temperature:
Varies between 22 to 34 degrees Centigrade through the year without much seasonal variations in the temperature. Highest temperatures occur in the months of March to May.
Humidity:
Humidity is high throughout the year and ranges between 75% to 90%.
Rainfall:
Average annual rainfall is about 300 cms and two thirds of this falls during the South West monsoon, which lasts from June to September.
