Project background
|
| Project History and Current Status | |
| The feasibility study (by M/S Frederic R Harris, the Dutch Consultants) for setting up of Vallarpadam transshipment terminal was completed way back in 1990. The national Shipping Board has endorsed the project in view of the substantial benefits that could accrue to the National Port Sector and the Indian Shippers. The updated feasibility report was completed in October 1998. |
| To develop the project faster it is envisaged that the existing Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal (RGCT) (where the draft can be provided upto 12.5 m) should be used to attract mainline traffic. This is proposed to be achieved through collaboration with a leading terminal operator. It is envisaged that that the port may enter into a separate agreement (arrangement to be decided by the Union Ministry of Shipping) with a reputed terminal operator to be selected through international competitive bidding route. | ![]() |
| This JV partner would also take up the development of Vallarpadam Terminal with a definitive time frame. The Cochin Port Trust (CPT) will take lead in completing the road bridge to Vallarpadam and in dredging the existing channel to be deepened to about 15 m. | |
| The road link to Vallarpadam Island is being implemented through Government of Kerala. 20% 0f the work has already completed and the link to the mainland will be ready by October 2003. |
