Cochin Port Trust handled traffic of 139.38 lakh tonnes during 2005-06 as against 141.03 lakh tonnes in the previous year.

The Container Traffic througput for the year was 2.03 lakh TEUs.

As regards the productivity parameters, the port recorded an average pre-berthing detention time of 13.7 hours, average turnround time of 2.6 days and average output per berthday to the tune of 7767 metric tonnes as against the previous figures of 11.0 hours, 2.6 days and 8613 metric tonnes, respectively.

A total of 1225 vessels including 26 cruise vessels visited the Port during 2005-06.

On the financial performance front, the operating income was 194.98 crores and operating surplus was 52.23 crores as against 207.48 Crores and 61.23crores, respectively, during the year before.
» During 2005-06, the operating ratio was to the tune of 73% as compared to 70.48% during the year before.
» The port spent Rs.33.74 crores as against the plan outlay of Rs.53.12 crores for the year 2005-06 including Rs.28 crores as budgetary support for capital dredging. Leaving aside the budgetary component the Port utilized 76% of the outlay.
» There has been a substantial reduction in the dredging expenditure over the years with the innovative scheme of draft based dredging introduced four years ago. While the expenditure on maintenance dredging was 39.2 crores during the year 1999-2000, it is as low as 24.57 crores during the year 2005-06, thereby showing savings of expenditure over 14.65 crores per annum.
» There has been a major reduction in the staff strength over the years which stood at 3559 as on 31-3-2006 as against 4439 as on 31-3-2002. This is the lowest strength ever achieved.
» During this year also, Cochin Port Trust has been in the forefront in the implementation of EDI. The connectivity between Port and Customs has been established by laying Optical Fibre Cable. Cochin Port Trust has developed an Integrated Messaging System for the implementation of “Port-Customs EDI Interface & Application Integration” for export and import related messages and started exchange of the messages.
» Cochin Port Trust has also taken, steps for implementation of the various projects under the National Maritime Development Programme (NMDP) which include Terminal facilities like International Container Transshipment Terminal, International Bunkering Terminal, International Cruise Terminal, International Ship Repair Facilities, LNG Re-gasification Plant, Single Buoy Mooring for Kochi Refineries Ltd.,etc. and Infrastructure development facilities like National Highway connectivity, Rail connectivity, Breakwaters, capital Dredging etc. at total estimated cost of Rs.8487 crores. These projects are in different stages of processing or implementation.
